The world is changing and new opportunities for those looking to discover and embrace them are born every day.

You no longer have to stick to a repressive traditional job, especially one with no growth opportunities in sight. Today, you have the freedom to work on your own schedule from a place of your own choosing. How?

By doing the same thing millions of people are already doing: remote online jobs.

But before we get into that, let’s talk a bit about traditional jobs.

What are Traditional Jobs?

Job Model Freedom Score – Traditional Jobs

  • Freedom from Work Space: ✩✩✩✩✩
  • Freedom from People: ✩✩✩✩✩
  • Freedom from Finance Control: ★★★✩✩
  • Freedom from Time Control: ✩✩✩✩✩
  • Freedom from Enjoyable Work: ★★✩✩✩

As long as you perform your work at a specific time and a specific location regularly, you’re doing a traditional job. The type of work you do or the number of hours you spend working is irrelevant. So is the fact whether you’re an employee or an employer.

However, a traditional job is not always so simple to spot. For example, take the trendy position of a Social Media Specialist. Do you think that’s a non-traditional job with minimal limitations? I hope not because with its location and time restrictions, it’s as traditional of a job as any.

Talk to any Social Media Specialist and they’ll tell you how much freedom their job offers. Hint: Not so much.

The main problem with traditional jobs is the non-flexible schedule. You are expected to follow a strict schedule; with no regard to your preference for place, time, or the day you’re supposed to work. In short, no freedom!

The restrictions of a traditional job hurt people with limitations most deeply. For example, seniors near retirement, patients with disabilities or chronic diseases, caregivers for seniors or disabled people or even a parent of a newborn. All these individuals are stopped from doing work they’re perfectly capable of because of the boundaries surrounding a traditional job.

Due to the limitations of workspace and environment, salary growth, and the complexities of staff-employer-client-vendor relationship, more and more people are leaving traditional jobs for better opportunities elsewhere.

FINAL Freedom Score: 1 out of 5 ★✩✩✩✩

Thanks to the rise of the internet, many new forms of alternative jobs have presented themselves for people willing to take a chance and get away from their restrictive traditional jobs.

The traditional job market was dominant in the past, but now, with new job options offering more freedom, the tides are shifting.

Alternative to Traditional Jobs:  Thriving New Options – Online Remote Jobs

Millions of thriving new jobs offering more freedom are sweeping the world. During the last decade, jobs such as Digital Nomad, Work from Home Jobs, Remote Work, and more, all of which are Online Remote Jobs, have been introduced to the world.

What are Online Remote Jobs All About?

Online remote jobs are services that sellers or marketers provide online without having to go to a workplace and without any time zone barriers. People work anywhere they can get internet, and they work on their own schedule.

Below is my list of five online remote job models sorted by the freedom–independency level.

1. Get Hired 100% – Remote/ Home Office Employee

  • Freedom from Work Space: ★★★✩✩
  • Freedom from People: ✩✩✩✩✩
  • Freedom from Finance Control:★★★✩✩
  • Freedom from Time Control:★★★✩✩
  •  Freedom from Enjoyable Work: ★★✩✩✩

Similar to traditional jobs, remote employees have to sign an official employment contract to provide the required services and receive the agreed-upon salary. This employment contract comes with terms and conditions applied, such as how many annual leaves you may have.

What is the BIG difference?

You don’t have to go into the office. You can work at home, a café, a bar… anywhere you want as long as you have internet access at work hours.

The KEY advantages:

  • Save on transportation and restaurant meal costs.
  • Save on travel time, which could easily be 25% of your total working hours if you lived in a big city with traffic jams.

Challenges and Risks Involved:

The challenges and risks are similar to traditional jobs.

FINAL Freedom Score: : 2.2 out of 5 ★★✩✩✩

2. Be a Boss 100% – Online Shop Owner

  • Freedom from Work Space: ★★★✩✩
  • Freedom from People: ✩✩✩✩✩
  • Freedom from Finance Control: ★★★✩✩
  • Freedom from Time Control: ★★★✩✩
  • Freedom from Enjoyable Work: ★★✩✩✩

Similar to traditional shop-owners, you earn money by selling products or providing services. You are your own boss.

What is the BIG difference?

NO physical shop needed. Instead, you only need a website for your virtual shop.

The KEY advantages:

  • Save the investment cost on rent, renovation, and maintenance of a physical store.
  • Running a website is relatively cheap and easy. You can operate it on your own or hire employees or freelancers depending on the business size and budget.
  • You still need to manage vendors, stocks, shipping, and customers. However, with so many advanced online business tools to help you manage the records automatically, you have nothing to worry about. Your online shop will be up and running 24/7.

Challenges and Risks Involved:

Just like running a traditional physical shop, income depends highly on supply and demand. In addition, you may need to keep stock in a warehouse and manage deliveries, depending on the scale and your logistics process. That being said, with the help of online marketing and e-commerce analysis tools, it becomes much easier to predict and prepare for any upcoming changes.

FINAL Freedom Score: : 2.2 out of 5 ★★✩✩✩

3. Be a Freelancer–Deal with customers only

  • Freedom from People: ★★★✩✩
  • Freedom from Work Space: ★★★★★
  • Freedom from Finance Control: ★★✩✩✩
  • Freedom from Time Control: ★★★✩✩
  • Freedom from Enjoyable Work: ★★★★✩

Freelancers have the freedom to choose the hours, place, and days they work. It’s not an easy job, but it sure is flexible.

As a freelancer, you are your own boss. That means you can choose the product or service you’ll offer to your customers.

Essentially, not only do you get the freedom to choose the hours you’ll work, but also the type of projects you’ll work on during those hours.

What is the BIG difference?

You don’t report to anyone nor deal with annoying suppliers, delivery staff or any other service providers. Your customers are the only ones that matter.

The KEY advantages:

  • Fewer people to deal with. Which means less stress and better focus on your work.
  • You can reject any project that doesn’t fit your schedule or preference.
  • You can decide how much work you need to reach your income goal.

Challenges and Risks Involved:

The income source could be unstable because it depends highly on your customers’ order size and frequency. More so when you’re just getting started, as there are no fixed contracts in freelancing. However, if you build up your reputation, you can get past the feast-or-famine routine.

FINAL Freedom Score: : 3.4 out of 5 ★★★✩✩

4. Be an Online Coach/ Teacher/ Instructor/ YouTuber–Deal with Students/ Subscribers only

  • Freedom from People: ★★★✩✩
  • Freedom from Work Space: ★★★★★
  • Freedom from Finance Control: ★★✩✩✩
  • Freedom from Time Control: ★★★✩✩
  • Freedom from Enjoyable Work: ★★★★★

Similar to freelancing, but with even more freedom in terms of choice of work. You can teach things you truly enjoy. However, to become an online coach, you need to be an expert in whatever field you choose to occupy.

What is the BIG difference?

In short, you are an expert who helps people learn. But that’s not all. You get to help people learn something you already love doing and are an expert on. And you get paid for it! Sweet deal, right?

While some online coaches may teach just for the money, the majority is driven by their passion for helping others learn and prosper.

The KEY advantages:

  • You have full control over how you’ll teach your students. You decide the time, duration, location, format, and even class size.
  • There are many ways to reach your students, both online and offline through downloadable text documents, audio or video materials. You can also offer 1-on-1 or 1-to-many virtual classes/webinars through internet conference tools (e.g., Skype, Zoom, Hangout, etc.).
Even if you’re an introvert, you can still reach thousands of students without having to get out of your comfort zone.

Challenges and Risks Involved:

Income can be unstable as it highly depends on on supply and demand. Getting students and building up your reputation can be tricky, especially if you don’t stand out from the crowd.

However, as long as you teach well and deliver results, you will build up your reputation and ultimately a more stable source of income.

FINAL Freedom Score: : 3.6 out of 5 ★★★✩✩

5. Be an Affiliate Marketer–Deal Only with Your Website

  • Freedom from People: ★★★★★
  • Freedom from Work Space: ★★★★★
  • Freedom from Finance Control: ★★★★✩
  • Freedom from Time Control: ★★★★★
  • Freedom from Enjoyable Work: ★★★★★

Affiliate marketers promote ready-to-sell products and services through affiliate links. This means you must redirect your traffic to partner websites through your own links to generate leads and sales for them.

For every person who clicks on your link and places an order, you earn a percentage of commission.

What is the BIG difference?

You are completely independent and fully in control, without the need to communicate or interact with anyone.

The KEY advantages:

  • You don’t require a physical office, store or warehouse. A computer with internet is all you need.
  • You don’t need to keep stock or manage shipments. You just refer people to partnered shopping sites with affiliate links and they handle the rest for you.
  • You don’t need to make direct contact with people. You can avoid the stress of dealing with demanding customers and confusing complaints.
  • You don’t need to invest tons of money, especially as a beginner. You can get started with the bare minimum.
  • You don’t need to work on tedious or trivial things. You can build the website content around a topic you like, which I encourage because you’ll enjoy working on things you’re passionate about. Take me as an example. I love online marketing and love to learn and share all the knowledge I have to help others. That is why I made this website.
  • You don’t need to run around like a headless chicken. The beauty of affiliate marketing lies in the wealth of online resources available to help you find customers and share your affiliate links. Your website, social media channels, emails, forums, and video sharing sites are all examples of platforms that can work for affiliate marketing.
  • You don’t need to hold a 1-on-1 conversation. You can maintain a one-way audience communication through websites or social media platforms by text, images, audios and videos.
  • You don’t need to stick to a strict schedule. You can work with any timetable that fits your physical stage, time, and financial needs. It can be during your baby’s sleep time, before your medical appointment, or after your morning exercise.

Challenges and Risks Involved:

It is hard but definitely not impossible. I say this because I am one of the thousands of successful affiliate marketers.

Like with everything else, it all depends on your effort. There are no golden rules on how to be successful. However, for beginners, there’s one rule I highly recommend:

Be patient and keep learning from your mistakes.

This is a simple rule that helped me overcome the beginner phase and it will help you too if you follow it religiously.

It will be worth every second invested because once you conquer the beginner phase, you can have full control over your work hours, income, and ultimately your lifestyle.

A common question I get is, “How long will it take to succeed?” The answer is, it depends.

I know it’s not the most exciting answer. But it truly depends on how much effort you’re willing or able to put in. Not just in terms of the number of hours, but also where and how you invest those hours. You need to use your time the smart way. I’ll tell you how in a minute.

As you gain more knowledge, the value of your content will skyrocket. And the higher the value your content offers, the more visitors your website will attract. In fact, you won’t just see an improvement in the number of visitors but also the quality of those visitors.

Endurance, patience, passion, creativity, and discipline are key to success. As long as you’ll keep going at it, you will eventually create the stable and sustainable income you’ve always wanted.

The return is complete freedom from all kinds of limitations of both traditional and alternative jobs mentioned earlier.

FINAL Freedom Score: : 4.8 out of 5 ★★★★★

Remember, I mentioned there’s a smart way to invest your time? It’s extremely important because how you invest your time determines how long it is going to take to succeed.

Why? Because an hour invested the smart way is worth 5 misused hours.

A comprehensive and thorough list of job types, including their pros and cons! You exposed them methodically, from the strictest to the most free.

So, being an Affiliate Marketer looks like the ideal job – in order to get there we need however some persistent work. Being a Freelancer or an online coach are also some possibilities, but for now I am considering the Affiliate variant as an option to choose. I also have a traditional job at this time. Still, I am in the beginning phase of Affiliate marketing, needing to increase my social visibility so that my niche website will be more easily accepted into affiliate programs.

    Best regards,
